Hammam rituals

The hammam, done the Moroccan way.

Steam, black beldi soap, the kessa glove and rhassoul clay on warm marble. An old ritual, and still the best reset we know.

Hammam

Heat, water and a thorough scrub.

A hammam is not a massage. It is a cleansing ritual: you warm up in steam, your therapist works black olive soap into the skin, then scrubs it away with a kessa glove so thoroughly you will see the result.

Rhassoul clay from the Atlas mountains follows for the body and hair, then buckets of warm water and a rest wrapped in cotton. Most guests describe the feeling afterwards as weightless.

Traditional Moroccan Hammam

You begin in the steam to warm up. On the heated marble table, black beldi soap is worked into the skin and scrubbed off with a kessa glove, then rhassoul clay is applied to the body and hair. Buckets of warm water rinse everything away, and you rest wrapped in a cotton peshtemal.

Disposable underwear and slippers provided.

Royal Hammam Ritual

Everything in the traditional hammam, plus a honey and orange-blossom body mask while you rest in the steam. It finishes with a 30-minute argan oil massage in a private suite. This is the ritual we recommend before a wedding or a big week.

Rose Hammam

A gentler hammam for sensitive skin: Taif rose soap, a fine pink salt scrub instead of the kessa glove, a rose and honey body mask and a rose-water hair rinse. You leave softly scented rather than scrubbed.

Hammam for Two

The private hammam suite is reserved for the two of you. You share the steam, the scrub and the clay, each with your own therapist, then finish with mint tea and dates on the screened terrace overlooking the marina.
